Owl Hat Pattern

In October 2012 I had an idea to make an owl costume for my then 10 month old. I was going to make a hat, a “dress” (which would be the body of the owl), and maybe even leggings as it can sometimes be cold when Halloween rolls around. Unfortunately, having a 10 month old (and a 3 year old to boot) got in the way of me accomplishing that goal.

However, I did make the hat.

The lighter colored one I made back in October. The darker one I just finished yesterday, and that is what the following pattern is from.

*Pattern*

Materials

  • Worsted weight yarn. I used Red Heart Super Saver: Chocolate (MC), Cafe Latte (CC1), Buff (CC2), and scraps of White, Black, and Orange.

  • Size K10.5/6.5mm crochet hook

  • Yarn needle, for sewing pieces together and weaving in ends

Note:

The hat is sized to fit a child 12-36 months. My kids have pretty big heads–especially my youngest. The hat fits both her (15 months) and my 3.5 year old. If you want a smaller hat, use a smaller hook, or chain less to begin. If you use a smaller hook, you can follow the pattern as stated. If you chain less, you will also have to do fewer rows/rounds. Use your best judgement. It may also be a good idea to measure the child’s head before you begin.

Hat

Rnd 1: dc in 4th ch from hook (ch 3 counts as dc here and throughout), dc in each ch to last ch, 5 dc in last ch; working on opposite end of ch, dc in each ch to last ch, 3 dc in last ch (46 dc)

Rnd 2-7: dc in each dc

Rnd 8-12: w/ CC1, dc in each dc

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Ear flaps

Fold ear in half and count four stitches to the right. Join yarn with slip stitch in that fourth stitch.

Row 1: ch 3, dc in next 7 dc (8 dc)

Row 2: ch 3 turn, dc in each dc across (8 dc)

Row 3: ch 3 turn, dc2tog, dc in next 2 dc, dc2tog, dc in last dc (6 dc)

Row 4: ch 3 turn, [dc2tog] twice, dc in last dc (4 dc)

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Border

Join CC2 in any dc on hat with sc join

Rnd 1: sc in each dc and evenly on sides of earflap all the way around to first sc

Rnd 2: rev sc in each sc; join with sl st

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Earflap Braids

Using CC1, cut 6 strands of yarn for each braid. Fold in half and pull through the center of the earflap. Even the ends up and braid the yarn strands together (4 strands per section). Tie the end off to secure.

Eyes

With White, make a magic ring

Rnd 1: 6 sc in ring

Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc around (12 sc)

Rnd 3: *2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc, rep from * around (18 sc)

Rnd 4: *2 sc in next sc, sc in next 2 sc, rep from * around (24 sc)

Rnd 5: *2 sc in next sc, sc in next 3 sc, rep from * around (30 sc)

Fasten off with long tail for sewing.

Pupils

Make 2; with black, make magic ring

Rnd 1: 6 sc in ring, join with sl st to first sc

Fasten off with long tail for sewing.

Beak

With orange, ch 2

Row 1: 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook (2 sc)

Row 2: 2 sc in first sc, sc in next sc (3 sc)

Row 3: ch 1, turn; sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in last sc (4 sc)

Row 4-5: sc in each sc

Sew the Beak to the front of the hat (whichever side has no ending tails). Sew Eyes close to each other (touching is nice, but optional) right above/on the Beak.
